Shaping Yiddishkeit
in Jackson, New Jersey

2019

A Legacy Ignited

Rabbi Hirsch travels to Kepno, Poland to visit the shul where his grandfather served as its last Rabbi. He subsequently tours major shuls across Europe, studying their design and spirit, planting the vision for a magnificent shul that would one day rise in Jackson. The year concludes with high level meetings in Washington D.C. seeking assistance in fighting the ongoing religious use discrimination in Jackson.

Mid–Late 2020

A Vision Before a Community

The first zoning application is submitted, before a Jewish kehilla even existed. At the time, much of the area was undeveloped. The goal was to build responsibly, with foresight and integrity.

2020–2022

Facing Municipal Resistance

Multiple zoning hearings are met with strong opposition. Houses of worship are not permitted in residential zones, making approval effectively impossible.
Federal and state authorities intervene, filing complaints and consent orders against Jackson Township for violating religious land-use protections.

May 2022

A Night Kollel is Born

The roots of our future kehilla are sown with the establishment of a communal night kollel where Yungerleit & Balei Batim devote their evenings to Limud Torah in what is likely the only setting learning Dirshu Halacha Yomi B'iyun, and on the way to completing Shulchan Aruch Orach Chaim.

December 2022

Finally a Vote

The Zoning Board formally votes on the application. Lacking the necessary supermajority affirmative vote, the motion is denied. This becomes a tipping point, triggering reconsideration and setting the stage for legal escalation.

January 2023

Conditional Approval Secured

A special meeting is held. In the presence of a standing-room-only audience, a motion of reconsideration is granted and the variance application is approved - a critical turning point after years of resistance.

December 2023 - June 2025

A Model for the Community

As a direct result of our political and legal pressure, Jackson Township adopts new ordinances permitting shuls in residential zones and introducing mikvaos into their Code - reshaping the future of Jewish life in Jackson. Khal Nachlas Avos becomes the trailblazer.

2025

From Vision to Kehilla

Shabbos minyanim begin.
Final planning approval is granted.
A living, breathing community takes root.

Today

Gearing Up for the Grand Shul

Resolution compliance is underway. While the building has yet to rise, Khal Nachlas Avos is already a vibrant shul deeply rooted in the community, flourishing with minyanim and its daily kol Torah.
